ADSM TSM Backup for Mac Bone Ten 10.4.7 +: Installation

2. Download the New TSM Client

The ACCC ADSM Mac Clients directory has a subdirectory with the latest client appropriate for Mac Archetype, Mac OS X up to x.3.9, Mac Os 10 x.4.seven to x.4.xi, and Mac Os 10.5. (Other Mac OS X's are non supported.)

If versions prior to Version five.3.two are installed in some other location, the following must be washed earlier installation:

Remove or rename the existing TSM Organization Preferences and TSM User Preference files in /Library/Preferences/Tivoli Storage Director.

Delete the prior versions.

MEMORYEFFICIENTBACKUP NO tells TSM not to take special intendance to conserve on your machine'south memory. The General tab (click on the names in the column on the left) .
- Node Proper noun: yrnetid .adsm1 (your netid - dot - adsm1), so adabyron's is adabyron .adsm1
- You will probably want to prune the log entries; I keep them for five days.
- Server Information will already be set to ADSM.CC.UIC.EDU (or ADSM-ii.CC.UIC.EDU) and y'all won't be able to change information technology on this tab.
The Backup tab.
- Check Compress objects
- Do not cheque Continue compressing if object grows
- Do fill-in only your local file systems, not any network file systems you might have attached.
  Put a bank check beside: /
  By default, just your Macintosh Hd -- / -- will exist backed upwards. If you have other file systems that have your personal data on it, you must send email to datasave@uic.edu explaining this to accommodate to have them backed upwards. We do not back up network or removable drives.
The Restore tab.
- Get out the default Inquire user before replacing -- this is the behavior when yous are restoring files that already exist.
The Include-Exclude tab. We already accept these from the Sample dsm.sys file. The ones that are not commented out in the file are practiced for everyone. There are other suggestions of filetypes that could not exist backed up that are commented out. The easiest way to piece of work on these is to open the dsm.sys file in TextEdit and remove the * from the types of files you agree should not exist backed up. I certainly did not agree with all of their suggestions. Be very careful to go on the quotation marks counterbalanced; if you get them wrong, the TSM client will not open.

Apply Utilities Preview Include-Exclude to see which files you lot will exist including and excluding. (This takes a fairly long time to run.)
- Note that this example has an Include.Encryption directory, which instructs TSM to encrypt the directory /Users/../Stickey Notes.

The Scheduler tab.

Keep the default Schedule Mode Polling.
Leave the Query Schedule Interval at 12 hours and the Retry Settings at 2 retries, 20 minutes apart.
All the TSM logs are in /Macintosh Hard disk drive/Library/Logs/tivoli/tsm/ by default.
Leave the Schedule Commands blank.

The Communications tab.
- Exit the Common Options at the defaults, Duration 60 minutes, Interval 15 seconds.
- For TSM Customer/Server Communications, keep the default TCP/IP.
- Your Server Address is of the grade: netid.adsm1 .adsmserv.uic.edu
  Thus the server proper name for Ada Byron'south adabyron.adsm1 ADSM account is:
  adabyron.adsm1.adsmserv.uic.edu
  (Notation that the ".adsm1" has naught to do with the number of the ADSM server you are using -- information technology's the number of your ADSM account -- ane. )
- The Port in all cases is 1500.

You can tell if y'all have this file by not being asked to enter a TSM password when you open the TSM client. If you don't have a TSM.PWD file, attempt changing your ADSM password with the ACCC Countersign Irresolute Utility and logging in with the new ADSM password.

Using Password Generate protects you from having anyone else sniff your password over the Net and login to your ADSM backups without your noesis. (In that location is no limitation to logging into to your backup files by IP address or anything like that. If there were, you lot couldn't use ADSM to call back files when you get a new computer or when y'all're using a fill-in estimator when your regular figurer is unavailable or existence repaired.)

  If it doesn't match exactly -- except for case -- you probably won't be able to open up TSM.

Here is a brief caption of what the wildcard characters hateful; for more information, see the manual

So, an example:

TSM User Preferences: dsm.opt

Open: Macintosh Hard disk drive/Library/Preferences/Tivoli Storage Manager/dsm.opt

five. Scheduling Automatic Backups

When the TSM scheduler wakes up, it will negotiate with the ADSM server to choose a start time for your daily backup. The backup volition occur at a random time. Exit the TSM client: TSM Backup -> Quit TSM Backup

That's it for manual backups. You can run a manual fill-in whenever you please, but automatic backups, which you lot are already set up for, are really the way to get. You lot just have to remember to go out your Mac on when you exit for the evening.
